Making Tech Good: Social-emotional Literacy Software

The Care Co looks how how technology can be leveraged for good and help scale kids mental health solutions.

The Care Co looks at leveraging technology to create good social impact—and increase equality and accessibility to key social services.

Tech giving you the ick? With so much technological innovation pushed into the market over the last two decades, we appreciate feeling the tech fatigue.

With that said, we believe in a balanced approach to technology and innovation; using tech to scale the good and encouraging offline time and tasks depending on the situation at hand.

So that we can make evidence-based psychology practices available to every child, worldwide, read on to learn more about The Care Co’s stance of leveraging tech-for-good and how we believe that technology is at a pivotal moment in history to expand opportunities, increase accessibility, and create equality.

Technology + Kids in the Classroom and At Home

More than ever, we’re hearing about the potential harmful effects of some technology of relationships, attention spans, mental health, and more. Of particular interest seems to be the potential side effects of kids using technology—both in school and in the home.

Some of the more common platforms, devices, and technologies of particular concern among young people include:

  1. Social media platforms
  2. Video games and online gaming platforms
  3. Instant messaging platforms, chat groups, and threads

"“Bring evidence-based mental health education, lessons, and support to all primary aged-students, worldwide.”."

And we don’t dispute it! Protecting minors—especially our youngest cohort still attending primary school—and educating all students about the potential harms and risks of some technology is well warranted.

While we wait for legislation, privacy protections, and risk controls to advance, limiting children’s exposure to communities, conversations, and highly addictive apps each day under guided supervision is always a good idea.

That said, we can’t dispute the innovation, accessibility, and life-changing outcomes other technologies have offered to both kids and adults alike. Among some of the most innovative and life-altering tech-enabled innovations to come about in recent history, we love:

  1. MedTech:

Short for medical technologies, technologists, scientists, physicians, and engineers have developed life extending and lifesaving medical devices in prosthetics, cancer treatments, neonatal care, innovations for blind, low vision, and deaf communities, and more.
  2. Saas, API Integrations:

Businesses can run more efficiently than ever and free up time for their people to work on tasks they are passionate about by leveraging some AI, API, Saas tools, and other 3rd party integrators.
  3. Education Technologies:

Students have more opportunities now than ever to learn at their own pace in a way that meets their learner needs. Better yet, educators can manage different lessons, learning styles, and pace lessons and assessments according to individual student abilities when using EdTech software and digital devices in the classroom.

Like we said—some technological innovations have made huge advances in critical areas like medicine and healthcare, business, and education. Knowing that all technology sets out to solve a problem without a solution, or, solve it more effectively than existing solutions, you might be wondering—how can tech apply to the psychology space?

Read on to learn more about the areas of opportunity we see for technology to leverage the efficiency, effectiveness, and scalability of software to bring mental health support to students worldwide.

The Care Co explores how technology can increase accessibility and encourage equal opportunities.

Leveraging Technology to Scale Social-emotional Literacy

Stating the obvious—we love the mental healthcare space. Passionate about education, learning opportunities, equality, accessibility, and psychology, The Care Co’s original mission was simple:

“Bring evidence-based mental health education, lessons, and support to all primary aged-students, worldwide.”

No lofty goal! So that we could test and refine the most effective paediatric psychology practices, iterate lessons for high-risk students and students with additional needs, and scale the accessibility of impactful mental health education around the world, we knew from day one our solution would likely include one thing—

Technology

Believing that a tech-enabled solution would help solve:
  • Limited access to qualified mental health support. We know that our wellbeing needs outweigh the supply of mental healthcare professionals.
  • Opportunities for personalised learning. Many educators struggle with managing a full class of K-6 students—all with different learning needs, behaviours, and abilities. Technology and software in the classroom can help teachers supplement routine delivery with individualised lessons. The Care Co looks at the positive sides of integrating technology into primary schools.
  • Assessment, observation, and refinement. Mental healthcare treatments and interventions are notoriously difficult to assess, track, and measure—especially for the wider population struggling with their mental health who may have limited to no access to professional psychological care. Following users' unique profile helps The Care Co understand the starting, end, and middle points of a student’s mental healthcare journey and learning path. (An outcome that would be almost impossible even for the most experienced K-6 educator!)

Long story short—some sciences, lessons, and healthcare solutions are their most effective when we deliver a combined online-and-offline teaching or delivery method.

Further still—with more technological advances and devices being refined for safe use in the classroom each year, The Care Co leveraging Saas (and the elusive ‘cloud’) means that we’ll be available to all educators interested and able in bringing social-emotional literacy to their schools in time.

Bringing Mental Health Habits to the World

By now we hope you can see how The Care Co is uniquely positioned to bring evidence-based psychology practices to all kids, worldwide.

By increasing the opportunities for all K-6 students to access effective mental health education in school, we’re breaking down the barriers that limit children and families from gaining the social-emotional education they need.

Better yet, technology offers a personalised engagement experience—meaning we’re delivering the tailored approach taken to most psychology care and replicating its effectiveness through software. Wondering if The Care Co could work for your students?
